3D Printing to Reduce Road Damage from Amish Buggies

The Amish community, not widely known for their enthusiasm for 3D printing, is interested in the results of a project which might lead to the redesign of their horses' shoes in order to cause less damage to roadways. The shoes that the horses wear resemble cleats and are designed to give better traction, but also concentrate the horse's weight in a much smaller surface area thereby causing damage to the roadway in the form of cracked asphalt and rutting. A Russ College (of Ohio University) professor of Civil Engineering has received a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation to investigate ways in which the calks could be redesigned to cause less damage.
