Paying Tribute to a Deceased Relative and Friend Via 3D Printing

3D printing can, as we've seen, be used to memorialize those who are no longer with us. Christopher Hoffman, a software developer with Florida-based OPIE Software and the talent behind YouTube channel "Hoffman Engineering," recently created a 3D printed bust of his brother to honor his memory following his recent passing. Christopher had gotten a 3D scan of his brother, James, in Christmas 2014, using Skanect software from Occipital with his Xbox 360 Kinect. Using MeshMixer and SOLIDWORKS, Christopher cleaned up the scan and created a plaque for the bust to rest on, and then turned it into Gcode and had the model printed. His brother's bust is now able to rest in a place of honor next to his urn, a fitting tribute to a beloved brother.
