3D Printed Bioplotting to provide Comfort to Diabetes Patients

Dr. Aart van Apledoorn of the University of Twente, in the Netherlands, is the co-author of research which says 3D printed “immunoprotective scaffolds” may be developed by using a non-degradable hydrogel. The hydrogel includes a mesh ideally sized to both block antibodies and immune system specific cells while the mesh remains large enough to allow for insulin diffusion. It's expected to be a radically improved treatment for Type 1 diabetes. The implant is embedded, or encapsulated, from a material that allows for very efficient oxygen and nutrient supply, and quick exchange of glucose and insulin, while keeping the host cells out.
