PhD Student Wins Award for 3D Printed Bone Scaffolds

Constance Maglaras, a biomedical engineering PhD candidate at the Stevens Institute of Technology, recently won first prize in Johnson & Johnson's 2017 Engineering Showcase for a poster and accompanying thesis presentation, ‘Interconnective Strut Based, Bioresorbable Bone Scaffolds: The Future of Orthopaedic Fusion.’ Maglaras has been working in making improvements to spinal orthopedics since she was a sophomore at Stevens. Her 3D printed scaffolds can hold tissue, promoting bone regrowth, for up to a month outside the body. Each scaffold can be constructed specifically to the patient’s body as well.
