Planned obsolescence has been around for a while, but it was introduced as a concept in its own right in the 1950s. Since then it has become part of the everyday language used by people, most particularly when they are frustrated by having to purchase new something that only required a minor repair. The increasing understanding of what is offered by 3D printing and its associated services is helping to create a culture in which spare parts are more easily accessible, even when the manufacturer no longer makes them.
