Canadian Researchers Create HoloFlex, Smartphone that Offers 3D Images

While the world of the smartphone certainly makes for a fiercely competitive marketplace, users are benefiting from an enormous array of high-tech options. Now, researchers in Canada at The Human Media Lab (HML) at Queen’s University have created HoloFlex--the first smartphone offering holography. This sophisticated 3D phone’s light-filled display is made up of pixel blocks that allow for projecting through a flexible microlens array that is 3D printed and holds over 16,000 fisheye lenses. And if the holographic aspect isn’t enough, this phone actually bends, with the flexibility allowing the user to manipulate 3D images—very helpful if they are working on a 3D printed model or gaming. The HoloFlex should also offer a whole new element to video conferencing, as those you are meeting with will literally pop out of the phone.
