3D Printing of Keys Has Evolved Even Further

University of Michigan researchers have created Keysforge, an app that automatically produces a 3D printable file from images of a key and a straight-on view of its lock. Keysforge allows for the 3D printing of any key, including those intended to be high-security and non-replicable. While the researchers clearly demonstrate that this is possible, their intent in releasing the source code and software is to provide the public and manufacturers an accessible look into the potential allowed by current, relatively low-cost technology. They researched several 3D printable materials and service bureaus to determine best material strength and general costs in the process.
