3D Printed Artifacts About to Be Sent to Moon

Since the first steps on the moon in 1969, only 12 people have walked there; soon, though, humanity will again make its mark on our natural satellite--this time with a rover carrying a small payload filled with just 6 oz of human arts. The "Moon Arts Ark" project, 7 years in the making, will be sent to the moon last year in Carnegie Mellon University's Robotic Institute's entry for the Google Lunar X Prize. The Moon Arts Ark will be enclosed in 3D printed chambers that were made using a 3D Systems ProX200 3D printer by 3rd Dimension Industrial 3D Printing. The 3D printed chambers each took 8.5 hours to print, and four chambers will be sent to the moon (and an identical four will tour Earth), holding two engraved sapphire disks, microcapsules with evidence of life on Earth, metal sculptures, dye sublimation imagery and various information that comes in the form of imagery, physical traces and data.
