Scientists Use Whirligigs to Diagnose Malaria

Scientists at Stanford University have found a new use for the whirligig, an ancient toy that involves spinning a disc on a piece of string. Using paper discs, as well as 3D printed ones, the researchers created a device that can separate blood samples to diagnose bloodborne diseases such as malaria. The device costs under one dollar to produce, in contrast to the expensive electronic centrifuges typically used for such diagnostics.
