3D Printed Adaptor Eases Process for Retinal Imaging with a Smartphone

An Opthamalic Science student in Auckland, New Zealand, recognized the need to enhance the process of capturing retinal images, which he was currently doing using one hand, a smartphone, and a hopefully still subject. He turned to 3D printing for the answer, assembling a team including Daniel Dillen, a product designer and 3D printing specialist from Vivienda, and Hanna Eastvold-Edwins, a product and mechanical engineer from The Popcorn Collective. Their functional device cost less than $50NZD to put together, as opposed to a professional fundus camera, which can cost $16,000 or more. Starting May 8, 2015, the open source files for the device will be made available, and an app called OpthDocs Eye App will be available to work with the device.
