Otolaryngology specialist Uses 3D Images to Examine Patients' Larynx

Otolaryngology specialist Dr. Claudio Storck from the University Hospital of Basel, Switzerland wanted to find out why a voice-altering phonosurgery called cricoid-thyroid approximation would only work on some of the trans women who had it. He hoped that he could find a way to make the procedure more effective for a greater number of patients. Using Materialise Mimics software, Dr. Storck and his team of researchers examined the original CT scans of trans patients’ pre-operative crico-thyroid joints. The software allowed them to generate high-resolution 3D images of the patient's’ larynx, which could be more closely examined than 2D images. Three types of crico-thyroid joints were immediately identifiable, and only one type would result in a successful alteration of the voice.
