MIT Researchers Use 3D Printing for Experiments with Haptics

Researchers from MIT’s Tangible Media Group recently conducted a study and produced a paper regarding the techniques used and the results of their ‘Materiable’ project, resulting in the paper, ‘Materiable: Rendering Dynamic Material Properties in Response to Direct Physical Touch with Shape Changing Interfaces.’ Here, they were able to show how the ten participants in their study interacted with 3D shape changing interfaces, identifying deformable material properties such as flexibility, elasticity and viscosity. The results indicate that in manipulating these types of materials and shapes, a better perception of rendered materials is experienced and this can translate to the digital realm as well for an enhanced experience.
