This might be a good starting spot:
DIY Scanner
That's the first I've seen of this. Has anyone tried building one?
You may also want to check out this 3D Scanner that is based on FabScan Open Source. Seems pretty cool.

You can actually 3D print the parts for it. It is still a work in progress though. But not bad for a DIY 3D Scanner.
hackaday have a number of different ones on their website.

Be careful when you are researching DIY scanners to check the date of the posts. Like all things relating to 3D printing, developments are coming thick and fast. Always check out the newest posts.
At the moment I'm looking to make a 3D scanner using information from the Net, but first I'm working on making the laser part so I will know the correct dimensions for its holder in the scanner I make. I like the one shown in this thread.

That's really good advice. It also pertains to brand new items that aren't tested yet also. People are just slinging new parts and concepts onto the web like there is no tomorrow, and if you buy something before it's been tested by a few people you may wish you'd have waited a few weeks.
By 'checking the date', I meant don't get too excited about posts that are a year or two old. I think that the idea of using an XBox Kinect has all but gone the way of the Dodo. I think it will be lasers and webcams for the DIY set.
