Open Source Ultimaker Files First Patent

Open-source 3D printer company Ultimaker has filed its first patent - but don't worry, the company says, nothing is going to change. The patent is being filed for defensive purposes as Ultimaker grows and enters the global professional market. Basically, the defensive patent keeps Ultimaker's IP safe and enables them to countersue if another company should ever accuse them of infringement, but their open source philosophy is going to remain the same.
