Materialise Works on Clinical Trials of 3D Printed Tracheal Splint

Materialise has announced that it is partnering with the University of Michigan and Tissue Regeneration Services to manufacture and start clinical trials for a 3D printed tracheal splint that was developed in 2012 to treat tracheobronchomalacia, a life-threatening condition that affects infants, causing the airway to periodically collapse. The splint was designed by University of Michigan professors Glenn Green and Scott Hollister using Materialise's Mimics Innovation Suite and printed with a bioresorbable biopolymer that harmlessly disintegrates and is absorbed by the body once the trachea is strong enough to function on its own.
