Adding and Subtracting from 3D Printed Objects

Xiang 'Anthony' Cheng of Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University, and Stefanie Mueller of Hasso Plattner Institute in Pottsdam, Germany are both working on 3D printing and milling methods that transform already existing objects. Cheng's design software, Encore, allows users to augment an existing object using a 3D printer. Mueller's notion of "patching" an object mills away unwanted portions of a printed object. Both believe that augmenting and patching are more sustainable methods that still use our beloved 3D printing and milling machines.
