3D Printed Filament Counter/Meter

Keeping track of the amount of ABS or PLA filament you’re using on a given 3D printing job just got easier. Thanks to one MakerBot Thingiverse contribute, Kyle Gagnon, you can 3D print the majority of the parts for a filament counter. Gagnon used a non-resettable, 5-digit rotary counter for his device, but will be coming out with a version 2 when he adapts his design to utilize an inexpensive, electromechanical counter that uses a 5v pulse signal. Is this like a trip odometer, or can it count down. Actually, for at a glance info, i would prefer to know ~how much filament is left over so i know if the print job i am about to start will get done... (slap 2 on, one that counts up and you can rest after each print job and one that you set when you add a new spool so track total amount left). This would let you know per print your approx amount used and also avoiding printing when there isnt enough filament.
