New Printer - Ramps 1.4 w/ GADGETS3D display displaying mostly garbage

I have a Ramps 1.4 board w/1 extruder and a Gadgets 3d lcd display, I have tried swapping the cables.
I am using marlin firmware and uncommented out the gadgets3d line and changed the mainboard to the ramps 1.4

note: [] = square block, could not post a picture on this forum for some reason so this is what is displayed on the lcd

I would post an image but no matter how tiny I and low quality I make the image I cannot upload it to this forum, I click upload and nothing happens

any ideas?
